2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo/6 MB L2
4 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 memory

Claiming to be the thinnest and lightest 17″ notebook out, it is just under an inch thick and weighs less than 6 pounds. The screen looks impressive, with a 140×120 viewing angle, 700:1 contrast ratio, and 60% greater color gamut than the previous 17″.

The one noticeable difference over the 15″ MBP is the battery - it’s a non-removable lithium polymer battery. Apple justifies this by saying that it’s the longest lasting MacBook battery ever, lasting 7 hours with discrete graphics and 8 hours with integrated graphics. It should last 1000 cycles, which at roughly 200 cycles per year would be 5 years. The battery will cost $179 to replace.

There is only one base configuration available and it’ll cost you $2799.

Press Release:

Apple Introduces 17-inch MacBook Pro With Revolutionary New Built-in Battery That Delivers Eight Hours of Use & 1,000 Recharges

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Apple(R) today unveiled the new 17-inch MacBook(R) Pro featuring a durable and beautiful precision aluminum unibody enclosure, and a revolutionary new built-in battery that delivers up to eight hours of use and up to 1,000 recharges for more than three times the lifespan of conventional notebook batteries. The new 17-inch MacBook Pro has a high resolution LED-backlit display and the same large glass Multi-Touch(TM) trackpad introduced with the new MacBook family in October. In addition, the new 17-inch MacBook Pro includes state of the art NVIDIA graphics and the latest generation Intel Core 2 Duo mobile processors. As part of the industry’s greenest notebook family, the new 17-inch MacBook Pro is made of highly recyclable materials, meets stringent energy efficiency standards and is made without many of the harmful toxins found in other computers.
“We’ve developed new battery technology that is better for the user and better for the environment,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Apple’s advanced chemistry and innovative technology deliver up to eight hours of use on a full charge cycle and up to 1,000 recharges.”

Apple uses advanced chemistry, intelligent monitoring of the system and battery, and Adaptive Charging technology to create a revolutionary new notebook battery that delivers up to eight hours of wireless productivity on a single charge and up to 1,000 recharges without adding thickness, weight or cost to the MacBook Pro’s incredible design.* The longer battery lifespan equals fewer depleted batteries and less waste, which is better for the environment.

The new 17-inch MacBook Pro includes an ultra-thin, widescreen glossy 1920 x 1200 display with 78 percent more pixels than the 15-inch MacBook Pro and a 60 percent greater color gamut that delivers desktop-quality color in a notebook. The LED-backlit display has brilliant instant-on performance, uses up to 30 percent less energy and eliminates the mercury found in industry standard fluorescent tube backlights.

Measuring just 0.98-inches thin and weighing 6.6 pounds, the 17-inch MacBook Pro is the world’s thinnest and lightest 17-inch notebook. The 17-inch MacBook Pro is the most powerful Mac(R) notebook yet with the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors available up to 2.93 GHz, up to 8GB DDR3 main memory and a graphics architecture that allows users to switch between the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics processor for better battery life and the powerful NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT discrete graphics processor for higher performance. The new 17-inch MacBook Pro includes a 320GB 5400 rpm hard drive standard with a 320GB 7200 rpm hard drive and 128GB and 256GB solid state drives as options. As with the rest of the new MacBook family, the 17-inch MacBook Pro includes a next generation, industry-standard Mini DisplayPort to connect with the new Apple LED Cinema Display featuring a 24-inch LED-backlit widescreen display with a built-in iSight(R) video camera, mic and speakers.

The new 17-inch MacBook Pro joins the aluminum unibody MacBook family in setting new standards for environmentally friendly notebooks with every model achieving EPEAT Gold status.** Each MacBook unibody enclosure is made of highly recyclable aluminum and comes standard with energy efficient LED-backlit displays that are mercury-free and made with arsenic-free glass. The new MacBook family meets stringent Energy Star 4.0 requirements, contains no brominated flame retardants and uses internal cables and components that are PVC-free. The battery in the new 17-inch MacBook Pro provides additional environmental benefit because its extended lifespan means fewer depleted batteries resulting in less waste. Depleted batteries can be replaced for $179 which includes installation and disposal of your old battery in an environmentally responsible manner.

Pricing & Availability
The new 17-inch MacBook Pro will be shipping at the end of January and will be available through the Apple Store(R) (http://www.apple.com), Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers for a suggested retail price of $2,799 (US), and includes:

The final release of Windows 7 will not occur until late 2009 or early 2010.

The ISO is for the Windows 7 M1 (7000) build and contains enhanced memory usage as well as access to previously hidden features such as an iconized task bar. ZDNet has given their seal of approval on this release, stating

This beta is of excellent quality. This is the kind of code that you could roll out and live with. Even the pre-betas were solid, but finally this beta feels like it’s “done.” This beta exceeds the quality of any other Microsoft OS beta that I’ve handled.

The Nintendo Wii will soon be offering a video service in order to establish a new revenue stream. Nintendo will be partnering up with the ad agency Dentsu to offer cartoons and other entertainment programs. In order to differentiate it from existing content delivery services the two companies will be be offering programs created specifically for the new service. While this may help set it apart from competitors, they should still offer existing programs akin to Hulu in order to please everyone. The service will start early next year in Japan and will not be seen overseas until late in the year.

Nintendo has already raked in more cash than it knows what to do with, so why do they need a new revenue stream? Hopefully it’s in order to fund more R&D to creating more creative and innovative ideas.

A Vietnamese security firm has demonstrated that laptop facial recognition software is not as secure as it may seem. BKIS, a Vietnamese Internetwork Security Center that makes antivirus software and has recently unveiled vulnerabilities in Windows Media Encoder 9 as well as Google Chrome.

Dong Ngo of CNET participated in a demonstration in which he first used a Lenovo Y430 running Vista and established himself as a legitimate user. Lenovo’s Veriface III software scanned his face for various points so that it would be able to recognize his face from various angles. The actual logon after the setup took less than a second. Within 5 minutes of starting up a Skype video chat with a BKIS technician, the technician was able to produce a “rather unflattering” picture printed on letter paper. The printout was able to log into the computer without any problems. Asus and Toshiba are also vulnerable to this problem.

The picture does not need to be high resolution, but needs to be processed such that certain key points and contrast levels are adjusted to match what the recognition algorithm expects. These vulnerabilities may be hard to overcome, so if you want to keep your laptop secure stick with username and password or fingerprint recognition.

Times Square will be getting an additional large billboard starting today. One Times Square is now occupied by Walgreens and they plan to market themselves to the best of their abilities. I must say that they will be achieving that goal very well as One Times Square is one of the most well known buildings in the world and is televised very frequently.

D3 LED, LLC is responsible for putting together the 340 foot high, 17,000 square foot sign that goes around three sides of the building. A total of 13 60-inch plasma displays and more than 12 million LEDs were used to create this massive billboard. The fascinating thing about the design is that the LEDs are spaced further apart the higher up on the building they are and at the street level the LEDs merge into the plasma displays that surround the store entrance. D3 LED is no newcomer to digital billboards - they have created numerous ones in Times Square, with a 7,880 square foot widescreen HD display for JVC going live Dec. 2 (it’ll only have 1.2 million LEDs).

The resolution of the display is supposedly 20 times that of a normal HDTV, and the color range exceeds normal TVs and even color printers. It will also be extremely bright for increased visibility - it produces 8,000 nits of brightness (1 nit = 1cd/m2) compared to the 200 of a normal LCD display. Behind the scenes of the display are 32 built in computers transmitting 150GB of uncompressed data every 30 seconds. The power bill for this will be huge since it consumes on average 250KW.

Jerry Yang, the CEO of Yahoo, has stated in a company memo that he will be stepping down. He will be holding the position until a new CEO is selected, but will plan to remain actively involved as an executive and board member. Jerry Yang has held the position after taking over for Terry Semel in what has been a rough year and a half. The stock price for Yahoo has been in constant decline and Yang has botched more than one large deal.

Taking the position of CEO in June 2007, Yang developed a plan to help Yahoo compete against Google. There have been several major cuts in staff, including an Oct. 21announcement that 10% of the 15,000 staff would be let go. Microsoft made an offer for the company in February with a bid of $31 a share, much higher than the stock price of $19.18 at the time. After months of negotiations in which Yang wanted a much higher price, Microsoft withdrew their offer in May. Following the Microsoft fiasco, he made a deal with Google to display ads next to Yahoo search results. This was supposed to bring in $250 to $430 billion in the first year, but Google backed out earlier this month after pressure from regulators with concerns about antitrust issues. It has been said that without the Google deal Yahoo would have to strike a deal with Microsoft or merge with AOL. Yahoo and AOL have talked about a merger for months and with Yang stepping down Microsoft may be looking to make another deal.

Yahoo stock jumped more than 10% today, with a high of $12.40.

Mmmm….spam, don’t you just love opening up that tin can and…wait, not that spam? While spam filters now are doing a decent job of filtering out a majority of e-mail spam, there is still much that can get through. McColo is a web hosting company that was a breeding ground for spammers. Companies that dealt in counterfeit pharmaceuticals and child pornography (hopefully not both at the same time) used the San Jose based hosting company. After the two internet service providers for McColo cut off their web access on Wednesday, the volume of junk e-mail dropped drastically.

Computer security experts are critical of the timeliness of the response and felt that action should have been taken sooner. There has been plenty of evidence in the past that pointed to McColo and its clients and their involvement in e-mail spam. Shutting down McColo could prove to be a double edged sword since the spam will be more disperse. When the majority came from McColo, it was relatively easier to protect networks.

I remember as a kid making models of various objects using paper and glue, but Mcor Technologies has taken that a step further with their Mcor Matrix. The Mcor Matrix is a 3D printer that does not use lasers and plastics like most that are currently available. The core materials are paper, adhesive, and a cemented tungsten carbide blade. The adhesive is a special water based PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) adhesive that will be offered by Mcor Technologies along with the blades. The paper will be supplied by the user and can be as low cost as 20 lb paper. The vertical resolution is based on the paper thickness and will be 0.1mm with 20lb paper although thicker paper will allow the process to be faster at the cost of reduced resolution.

There is also the option to make colored parts with colored paper. The machine reduces waste by selectively putting more adhesive only on the cross-section. The part profile is then cut with the blade. The finished parts appear similar to wood and post processing can include hardening with cyanoacrylate adhesive, sanding, and painting. The cost of producing parts is drastically reduced by up to 40 times less than current methods due to the use of low cost materials. The Mcor Matrix is scheduled to be released in Q1 2009 in the US. The maximum build (316.33 oz.) of the printer costs under $135.
